About
Hi! My name is Vaughn Chung, and I’m the founder of The Chung Method.
Although my methods are a marriage of classical and modern philosophy, I have a background of humble beginnings. In the summer of 2007, I used all of my savings to purchase a guitar, a few DVDs, and a Blink-182 instructional booklet. I couldn’t afford to take lessons, so I paused videos, studied frame by frame, and filled out entire notepads with my notes and observations.
As a young adult, I began to take guitar lessons from some incredible local talents. I began honing my skills with a more structured approach with Houston Community College’s guitar program and with music theory classes at the University of Houston. I did session work for artists representing many different music genres, played guitar for my local church, performed at weddings, and started my own music projects. Paper Gliders is an indie rock band that I founded and also co-write in, and I highly recommend checking us out if you want a clearer picture of my influences!
I founded my business as Chung Music Academy in 2014 on a mission of delivering education that could make sense to anyone, from curious children to bedroom warriors, and people that are on the fence about learning something new. I have been recognized as a “Top Pro” on Thumbtack for 9 years and formerly directed the guitar program at Fortissimo Yamaha Music School. My passion for music is at the root of everything I stand for, and I intend to fully convey that through every step of the process!
As your instructor, I have condensed thousands of hours of experience into a program that will make sense for you. We will work hard, work smart, and have tons of fun making your goals become a reality. Welcome to The Chung Method!

FAQs
What should I know about your pricing?
My pricing is set firm at my studio and will vary depending on the distance traveled for private sessions at student's residences.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
It didn't take long for me to realize that education and music were what I was most passionate about. After teaching a few folks early on as a working musician, I became enamored with seeing my students feel joy from playing their respective instruments, so the feedback loop of "a-ha!" moments as well as seeing them put in the work is incredibly rewarding.
What is your typical process for working with a new client?
I look for what inspires you, such as pieces that fuel your interest to play alongside musicians you aspire to emulate. Your long term goals are just as important as your short term goals, so I make sure I have a clear picture of what you're looking to achieve.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I've instructed many types of students, ranging from working musicians, undergrads, singer-songwriters, music producers, and children as young as 8 years old.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing guitar for over 15 years, and took formal lessons from some of the most incredible instructors in Houston. I have a background in music theory and guitar specific disciplines via HCC and the University of Houston.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
Before you get started on finding an instructor, you have to be honest about your goals and have realistic expectations. For example-- how much time can I dedicate aside for practice? Am I planning on setting up lessons weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly? Do you have an abstract or clear view of what a first lesson should look like at your skill level?
